Derren Brown and the ethics of conjuring!

Interesting discussion on the JREF today. One poster compalined that Derren Brown as was “bad as Uri Geller” – not sure how bad that is meant to be! -after he talked nonsense about how he did the Lottery trick that intrigued the nation, rather than revealing how he did it. ( I think I know how he did it, but I’m not saying!) Anyway, I don’t believe a word Derren Brown offers as explanation in his book or in his TV shows for how he does his tricks. BUT I’m not sure that is a bad thing. He is an entertainer. He entertains. Continue reading

Skeptics – Help Stop CJ23.com!

I was just thinking: we have Robert Lancaster’s excellent Stop Sylvia site, which I think is an excellent cause, and now we have other similar sites dedicated to stopping prominent woo’s. I originally intended on the morning of April 1st … Continue reading

Ambiguity, Belief, Religion and Terror

OK, so today I picked up New Scientist, because I’m interested in gravity, and there was a fairly basic bit on it in there. Nothing very exciting I did not know as it turned out, but New Scientist is always worth a read anyway. There was an article on how engineers form a disproportionate number of rightist and Islamic terrorists – well I hardly thought this was news, the only profile I ever saw for a religious terror suspect a few years back in a book on terrorism said exactly the same thing as this new research. Continue reading

Why are people so shocked to find I am a Christian?

Admittedly, I don’t actually talk about religion much on my blog – when I do, the Religion category to the right brings it up – but why is my Christian faith so shocking to so many of my friends? Yes I’m cynical, sceptical, and swear occasionally though not much at all in “real life” — but what do people expect from a Christian nowadays? Continue reading

Helena in Nazareth

And this is the whole thing – the myth of Nazareth not existing hinges on a place that clearly existed before and after the time of Jesus mysteriously stopping existing at the time of Jesus, then reappearing again, with the same name, and the Gospel writers who were trying to convert Jews in Palestine inventing a fictitious place for some bizarre reason of their own, that just happened to come back in to existence. Continue reading

The Battle of Jutland as Applied Philosophy

Let’s imagine this as a scene from one of those 1940’s British war films about heroic Brits with stiff upper lips giving Johnny-Hun what-for… in this film produced by the Ministry of War we see the final triumph of British Empiricism over Continental Rationalism (two philosophical ‘movements’ if you like) , at the Battle of Jutland as it should have been… Continue reading

Wild “paranormal” theory! Why ever not?

WILD PARANORMAL THEORY! I wrote this for fun a couple of years back on James Randi’s forum… thought might amuse! I thought time to allow myself some wild speculation and kookery, and the original featured LOTS OF STUFF IN CAPS, … Continue reading

My Problem with the Paranormal!

OK, so tonight I’m going to talk about my problem with the paranormal. And here we have a problem straight away – what is the Paranormal? The term is used so loosely as to be almost meaningless. Continue reading

Debunking the Myth that Jesus Never Existed – the Historical Sources for Jesus, Part One

It seems bizarre to many that some people believe that Jesus never existed. Not Jesus the figure of faith, miracle working Son of God – nope – even a historical holy man Jesus, who inspired the stories in the bible. … Continue reading
