TV Review: Panthera Britannia – are there big cats in the British countryside?

It seems odd to us now but when I was a kid I lived through one of the coldest winters on record in the UK — December/January 1981 to 82, when blizzards swept across the country and heavy snow isolated … Continue reading

In Memoriam: Robert Moore, UFOlogist – 1967 – 2023.

Today is the funeral of my friend and ASSAP Vice Chair Robert Moore: UFOlogist, folklorist, and researcher. We are thinking of his friends and family and raising a glass to his memory. A number of ASSAP friends are travelling to … Continue reading

Sad News from ASSAP

One never expects this moment; and one never quite knows when it is the right time to write. I have done my best to phone his friends, and to confirm beyond doubt the sad news, and so I must let … Continue reading

The Case Against “Paranormal Unity”; or why Ghost Hunters have become meaningless.

Those who know me probably know that I am a ghost hunter. What does that actually mean, in real terms? Do I wear a pith helmet and shorts, and carry an elephant gun, and like the big game hunters of … Continue reading

Dealing With Ghosts, Part One: Some friendly advice for journalists, T.V. researchers and writers.

Every few weeks I receive a phone call or email from an interested media person, wanting me to help them out with an article, documentary, occasionally a film and sometimes a series. In the past I have cooperated, and have … Continue reading

Why Everything We Think We Know About Ghosts Is (Probably!) Wrong

If you are interested in ghosts you may want to take a look. By kind permission of the editor, Dave Wood, my paper, with only the graph missing, follows. Continue reading

An Interview on the Big Announcement with ASSAP Chair Dave Wood.

CJ: Evening Dave. Firstly, can I thank you for an excellent and very enjoyable conference with 18 excellent speakers (and me). I thoroughly enjoyed all the presentations, the meal, and the opportunity to hear Stephen Volk talk about Ghostwatch! Of course I will be writing about the conference tomorrow, but what everyone wants to know is about the Big Announcement. It certainly came as a surprise, though I had come close in my speculation on this blog. Do you mind if I ask a few questions I’m sure many people have? Continue reading

UK Paranormal Investigation Changes Forever? The ASSAP big announcement

OK, I’m back from the ASSQP Conference, and yes this might change things forever at least for a lot of small paranormal groups. It won’t however effect anyone outside the UK, but basically, from what we were told, ASSAP, the Association for Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena has been recognised by the UK government as the Professional Body of “paranormal investigators”. That does not mean the UK Government believes in the paranormal in any way: far from it, all it means is that it recognises that “paranormal investigators” deal with potentially distressed clients, and that it is in the public interest to allow some form of self regulation of the sector.

Seriously Strange – UK Paranormal/Parapsychology/Scepticism Event, September 2011

Anyway from 1981 to 2011 is thirty years, and ASSAP are putting together what looks to be a truly fantastic conference to be held this year at the University of Bath, on the 10-11th September. The anniversary conference is entitled Seriously Strange, and looks perfect for both the really hard core paranormal research types who are interested in ganzfeld experiments & Bem’s precognitive habituation, through the most ardent ghosthunter, and certainly given ASSAP’s always critical and sceptical approach Sceptics. Forteans will love it too, from what I can see of the line up. Continue reading
